In the heart of Rūaumoko Marae, two extraordinary days unfolded, where eager learners from across the region converged to gain knowledge, forge connections, discover their sense of belonging, and revel in moments of pure joy.

The learners enjoyed various daily activities to connect them to their unique place within the Turi Māori community. They explored their cultures, identities and Deafhood through art, waiata, dance, and rakau.

They used clay and other natural items to create beautiful pieces of art reflecting papatūānuku. These taonga were then kiln-fired, glazed, and refired, and then the learners could take these precious treasures home as reminders of their special days.

Another highlight was eating the kai that we prepared collaboratively. The smiles throughout the day were broad and infectious. Familiar faces were acknowledged, old friendships reignited, and new bonds blossomed.

The conversations in the back of the car on the way back to their schools were hilarious and moving. They showed teachers the importance of the learners finding their place in the world.

The most significant indicator of how successful these days have been is how often the learners ask about the next get-togethers in 2024. The learners eagerly await the next regional Rūaumoko hui in 2024.
