Bryanna ORegan - Provision Lead Teacher — September 11, 2023
As part of the curriculum refresh, we have been busy teaching the pilot project for NZSL NCEA, both in the provision and online, from Invercargill to Auckland!
Paula and Bryanna have had fun teaching NZSL NCEA this year. They have both been part of a group writing the standards with the Ministry of Education and other Ko Taku Reo staff, NZQA, AUT, Deaf Aotearoa and Freyberg High School. At the Hagley Provision, we have students learning on Zoom from outreach mainstream schools nationwide and our Provisions. We also have a face to face class with Hagley College and Provision students. We have a mix of hearing and deaf students learning NZSL.
Rangatahi has been filming its internal assessments and preparing for the first NZSL NCEA external exams.
An exciting development is that NCEA students who are Deaf and use NZSL as their primary language can now use the NZSL credits for L1 literacy.
What do our students have to say about NZSL?
"I love learning NZSL; I have never learnt grammar before."
"I want to learn more! I wish I had learnt the proper structure when I was little."
"It all makes sense now! Paula makes things so clear."
"I feel closer to knowing my identity now."
"I have my literacy credits now and can finally get my NCEA level 1 certificate, yah!"
"My NZSL class with Bryanna is so much fun; the topics are interesting, and I am confident now."
"I want more NZSL...more linguistics, structure, grammar, fun."
"Learning online is hard, but I am trying my best."
"Before, I only learnt English, but now I am learning my language; I love that I don't have to rely on an interpreter."
"I love connecting with other students across the country; I feel comfortable in my class and love learning NZSL."
"Learning NZSL has made me much more confident; I can see a future career using NZSL."
"I feel sad when my Zoom class ends; I feel free when I can use my language and all of the teaching is in NZSL."
"I got my first excellence ever! I am so proud of myself and my language."
