A Trip To Samoa, Christmas Keep in Touch Day and Student Success

Louise Elgar - Outreach Team Lead and Rebecca Renfrew - Outreach Team LeadDecember 4, 2023

A Wellington student recently visited Samoa. We hosted our largest Keep in Touch (KIT) Day, and one of our students succeeded with performing arts at school.

Rouel’s Trip To Samoa

Rouel has learned English and NZSL and can now communicate with her aiga (family) and peers. She is an incredibly hard worker, so clever and loves learning as much as possible. She recently travelled to Samoa, and her aiga was amazed at how much she had learned. She is working hard on her reading and writing. Keep up the excellent work, Rouel. Malo lava le galue, Rouel!

Christmas Craft KIT Day

Christmas came early in Wellington this year, with 40 students attending our last KIT Day for the year.

There were lots of activities available for the children to choose from. These included:

  • Christmas Decorations
  • Decorating star cookies
  • Making Christmas crackers
  • Christmas hair ties
  • Decorating a Christmas tree for the Wellington office
  • An Imagination Station (with lots of craft items)
  • Bubbles and a Reindeer Christmas game

The biggest highlight from the day was the interactions between students. They helped each other and played together. Students shared with us that they had made new friends, enjoyed it, wanted to come again, were glad they came, and that it was a fantastic day.

Student Success - Rhys Bendig

Rhys performed at his college Arts Extravaganza earlier in the year. He signed “Any Dream Will Do” from Andrew Lloyd Weber’s musical - Joseph and the Technicolor Dreamcoat. Rhys used to be so shy and hated going on stage. He performed in front of an audience of 400 at Southwards Car Museum.

At his college prize giving in November, he was awarded the Dryburgh Trophy for his courage in Performing Arts. It was a big deal being recognised for his incredible progress over the years.
