Bay of Plenty Board Game afternoon was a great success

One of our Outreach school students has used his leadership skills this year to plan and host a board game event for the Deaf and hard of hearing tamariki at his school. He showed great initiative, and the afternoon created a great sense of belonging for all the students who attended.

Rico is a Year 6 student who attends Western Heights Primary School in Rotorua and receives service from our Outreach School, Resource Teacher of the Deaf (RTD).
This year, Rico's lessons with his RTD have focused on building leadership skills for Rico. He has been recognised as a leader at Te Kura o Whakaahu and was selected to be a Year 6 prefect, which is a fantastic achievement.

Rico wanted to connect with all the Deaf and hard of hearing students at his school and came up with a great initiative to host a fun afternoon of board games with some yummy kai. The purpose of this was to connect with and learn from other Deaf and hard of hearing students.

Rico started planning the event, and his first job was to write a letter to the principal asking permission to host it. He then surveyed the students, asking them what they would like to do. Board games and kai were their top choices! Rico researched invitations and made his own to send to the students. He also wrote lists of equipment and a menu for the day.

Rico was a fantastic event planner and host. He helped set up the room, made the food, and collected each child from their class to show them where to go.

Lots of the kids have said they really enjoyed their afternoon. Rico has said he would like to plan another event, but he wants to do something different next time! We are very excited to see what your next event is, Rico. Tino pai to mahi.
