'Choosing' to Connect and Communicate!

Do you remember your favourite story as a child?

Very young children learn best by making choices. This way, they can follow their interests and explore their ideas while feeling safe and supported by warm and interactive adults. At Ko Taku Reo Preschool in Kelston this term, the students have explored different stories each week. Some were traditional stories like 'Goldilocks and the Three Bears' and 'Māui and the Sun', and some were recent picture books like 'Who Sank the Boat'. The characters and pictures that arose in the stories have inspired us to play with ideas like floating and sinking, small, medium and big, heavy and light, hot, cold and warm, and soft and hard. There was so much science, drama, math, and lots of fun language to explore!

Our preschoolers love to choose how they communicate, who they play with, and how they experiment with different resources. These choices feed their curiosity and love of learning.
