Implementation plan by Ko Taku Reo Deaf Education NZ

Implementation Plan Update

This year our school started working together on bringing to life our strategic framework through our annual implementation plan. Every part of the school is working together on the same strategic plan.  Our collective goal is to: Educate and Empower Deaf and Hard of Hearing Learners for Success. We will do this by focusing on Languages for Learning, Communication and Connection; Learning Success; and Identity and Wellbeing. In our future newsletters, we’ll share stories to show how we are making this happen.

As this is the first year of our implementation plan, our natural focus is on scoping, researching, developing and deciding. Here’s a quick snapshot of some of the projects we’re working on.

Languages for Learning, Communication and Connection

  • We are creating a shared understanding of what it means for a student to have a delay in language acquisition and how we can support our students with language delay.

  • We are trialing a tool to track NZSL progress of students learning NZSL.

Learning Success

  • A new provision for secondary students in Wellington has been approved.

  • A new report template for mid-year reports for parents has been developed.

  • A virtual preschool has been set up.

  • We have had meetings with our Australian colleagues to share ideas and learn from each other in how we track students’ progress.

  • We are piloting a new ‘towards independence’ programme at Hagley provision, this will help to prepare our students for when they leave Ko Taku Reo.

Identity and Wellbeing

  • The Deaf Studies Guidelines will be ready for launch next term.

  • We have created a Deaf Culture induction strategy for new staff.

  • We have created new modules for teachers to learn more about Mātauranga Māori.

  • Teachers have received professional development on how to include Ka Hikitia into their planning and teaching.
