Students Choose to Shine in Theatre Workshop by Ko Taku Reo Deaf Education NZ
A one time opportunity with Deaf role models fosters talent, confidence, and creativity!
In term 3, Nirvana (teacher) organised a Theatre Workshop for Hillmorton and Hagley Provisions students. Two Deaf Role Models from Equal Voices Arts led the session, Thora and Rāhera from Hamilton. The Ministry of Culture and Heritage funded the event, and the workshop aimed to build Deaf people’s talent in theatre. It was a one-time event, and we were very fortunate to have had access to it.
The workshop was held in the Drama Theatre at Hillmorton High School. Our students chose to get involved and gained an understanding of Deaf arts, Deaf theatre and physical storytelling, as well as developing self-confidence and building trust in others. They also unfolded their creativity, grew their understanding of teamwork and created stories and messages through performing art.
This full-day workshop had fun activities, games, and learning opportunities! Our students had an incredible time, chose to be super engaged with the learning and felt a strong sense of belonging throughout this experience!
