A year full of loose change by Ko Taku Reo Deaf Education NZ
Annie Mein & Janet Wardle-Peck — November 19, 2021
All our students enjoyed successfully trying new subjects this year.
We farewelled Mary Courtney at the end of Term 1. Mary has given many years of service to deaf education.
We welcomed a new teacher to our provision in Term 2.
The students pursued their passions. The subjects they selected are interesting and varied.
We all enjoyed getting to improve our use of digital technologies through 2 very different lockdowns! We have become fluent in Zoom, Google Meets, Kahoot, Screen Shares, etc.
Students developed their leadership skills by leading our LA times. LA= Learning Advisor times. Another highlight was Janet organising guest speakers from the deaf community in term 3. These speakers visited our school. One guest per week. This was substantial organising, very generous, and opened the students minds. We learned how to access WINZ supplements, what the Deaf Association offers, how to overcome difficulties in their life. We also had disability services representatives visit from the University of Auckland. We really appreciated the time given to us by these role models from the deaf community.
