Christchurch Term 1 KIT Day - Orienteering at Victoria Park

Amy Jackson - Resource Teacher of the DeafNovember 8, 2021

During term one of this year the Christchurch students, teachers, and whānau had a very fun outing to Victoria Park for our Kit day.

The activity for the day was orienteering where we worked in teams to locate the controls on our map. However, to begin the day the children enjoyed playing on the playground together. There was lots of fun equipment to explore, such as the big slide. The steep steps didn’t bother them at all as they bravely went up them and down the slide. The children also enjoyed catching up with their friends and having morning tea together.

After a play on the playground and with full tummies to give us energy, we then moved into our teams for the day. Each team was handed a map with different controls (markers) that we needed to find. Then we read our map together to decide the best way to complete the course. Once the team had formed a plan we set off to locate the different markers. This was not an easy task, as the terrain of the course was always changing. We had to go up and down steep hills and climb over branches and rocks, as we looked for the controls. The students were clearly up for the challenge, remaining focused on discovering the different markers. The older students also took a leadership role supporting and guiding the younger students around the course. The activity was a great way to promote problem-solving skills and knowledge of mathematical concepts, such as numbers, measurement, and coordinates. All the teams managed to locate several of the markers successfully and were clearly proud of their efforts.

We finished the day by having lunch together, as the children were clearly hungry and tired after finishing the course. The day had been a great success, with lots of fun and laughter and many friendships made. Ka pai tō mahi tamariki mā ! (good work children!).
