Growing and Celebrating Matariki at Auckland Preschool

Krista Clifford - Early Childhood Pre-School LeadJune 18, 2023

This term at Preschool, we embarked on a captivating journey, discovering the magic of growth and exploring where our food flourishes and embracing the beauty of Matariki. We ignited young hearts with wonder and inspiration.

We learnt about Tupuānuku - this star is connected to the food grown in the ground. We cooked kumara, potatoes and carrots.

Waitā is the star we learned about, connected with the ocean. We tasted nori (seaweed) and sang/signed songs about Kaimoana.

Waitī is connected to fresh water and all the creatures living within rivers, streams, and lakes, which we learned about. We learnt how important it is to keep our freshwater clean (who wants to drink dirty water??), watched videos about catching and cooking eels, and then made an eel display.

Tupuārangi teaches us about foods from the sky – the birds and the fruit from the trees. We tasted different fruits, particularly persimmon, plentiful at this time of the year!

In learning about the stars of Matariki, we are growing in our languages and understanding how our world provides for us.
