Small School Warmly Welcomes a new Deaf Student by Ko Taku Reo Deaf Education NZ
Angela Lindsay - Deaf Studies Lead/Teacher of the Deaf — June 15, 2023
Embark on a transformative journey at Rangitaiki School as they embrace New Zealand Sign Language and Deaf culture. Together, we cultivate a safe space for Amaia-Rose's sense of belonging, connection, and educational growth.
Amaia-Rose, formerly a student at Kelston Preschool, recently relocated with her whānau to Rangitaiki, a serene area nestled between Taupō and Napier, known for its farming and forestry. Her devoted Communication Education Support Worker, Diane Smith, brings valuable experience as a former Preschool Teacher at Kelston Deaf Education Centre in the early 2000s. Leveraging Turi TV and NZSL resources, predominantly from Ko Taku Reo, Diane has been instrumental in assisting both teachers (kaiako) and students (ākonga) at Rangitaiki School in learning NZSL and embracing Deaf culture.
On Amaia-Rose's first day, Bradley, one of the students, conducted interviews for Kea Kids News. He shared their collective learning journey and utilised NZ Sign Language to foster Amaia-Rose's sense of belonging, connection, and educational progress within the school community.
