Engaging Storytelling Techniques for Preschoolers by Ko Taku Reo Deaf Education NZ
Vashna Subratty - Early Childhood Teacher of the Deaf — June 24, 2024
Storytelling is a particular focus in our Preschool activities this term. During mat time, we present stories in multiple ways to keep children engaged and cater to different learning styles. We read traditional tales and popular picture books, including Māori stories. We also did activities related to stories, such as games, art, and role-play.
We have seen growth in numerous ways. More children are willing to come for mat time. We have noticed some children playing pretend by acting out parts of the story. Some children have been sharing the stories they read with their whānau at home.
This multi-sensory approach has provided ample opportunities for the children and the teachers to learn and grow together. The increase in participation, the emergence of imaginative play, and the children sharing stories at home highlight the success of this approach.
We look forward to continuing this enriching journey, fostering creativity and learning through the magic of stories.
