Beyblades and toys at school

Andrew Ducat —

Remember fidget spinners, yugioh cards and slime?

When I was at school marbles were cool. There were so many different types of marbles - cats eye, steelies, clearies etc. Every break time there were hoards of children playing self regulated games. When I joined the teaching profession many years later the first school I worked at had a marble season. I think this was the school's attempt to manage a stressful time of year for teachers.

Today, many schools ban things like marbles, beyblades and other toys as they become a distraction in the classroom and a management problem for staff to deal with, supporting children resolve disagreements, injustices and theft.

I do not believe in making a blanket ban on specific toys from school. Some of the things children bring to school, such as yugioh cards, promote reading and language enrichment. Other items, such as slime, inadvertently create more problems than good. When this occurs, I discourage children from bringing certain toys to school.

Beyblades have become a problem in some classes. Problems that have occurred during break time have required teacher input to resolve, which then eats in to learning time. Please talk to your children if they bring bayblades to school.  Talk to them about looking after their toys. Is it a good idea to bring your most precious bayblade to school? Is it a good idea to bring lots of different parts? Should you swap parts with other kids? Help empower them to deal with the potential challenges that occur.
