Cutting down of pest trees

Andrew Ducat —

Please note that the Story Tree and Waterfall walking tracks will not be accessible to the community from the 20th-23rd of May.

As Kaitiaki of the bush reserve which makes up more than half of our 8.5-hectare site, we have made a commitment to removing introduced species and replanting cleared parcels of land with native plants, eco-sourced from the Waitakere region.

Part of our long term plan is to remove as many of the larger, introduced species of trees, such as Wattle and Pine. We recognise that by cutting down established trees results in the collateral damage of the native undergrowth. By removing the upper canopy, which is dominated (in some places) by introduced species, native species can then thrive in their natural habitat. We will also remove the culprits behind the constant re-seeding of new noxious trees.

With this in mind, we have a team of arborists coming in who will remove two large stands of Wattles - one located near the bottom of the Waterfall track, and the other one at the top of the Story Tree track.

The team will also be mulching up excess branches and scrub on site.

This is noisy and hazardous work. Signage will be up and staff will be keeping a close eye out for members of the public.

Please do not use the tracks while the work is being carried out.
