Sustainable Schools Guiding Principles

Mandy Vanderwee —

The Guiding Principles for the Sustainable Schools Programme help us with our planning and decisions making.

Each principle covers a broad concept. Our teaching programmes and day to day school routines reflect many of the guiding principles.

1. Empowered Students - student-driven activities enabling them to participate in a meaningful way. Children taking action for real change.

2. Māori Perspectives - honours the status of Tangata Whenua and the value of indigenous knowledge. Helping to educate communities and whānau.

3. Learning for Sustainability - recognises the learning and teaching we do in classes every day and at break times.

4. Respect for the Diversity of People and Cultures - acknowledges the unique gifts, contributions and perspectives of individuals and groups.

5. Sustainable Communities - means our school acts in ways that nurture people and nature, now and in the future.

As a Silver Enviro School, we have worked hard to embed  the Sustainable Schools Principles. As we work towards Green Gold status, we can reflect on our journey over the last five years and be sure that we are considering the principles when we plan any activity or project in and out of class. This is also reflected in after school and weekend events supported by our PTA and Board of Trustees.
