Persephone

By Olivia Gardiner, Rm 8

Once there was a goddess called Persephone. She looked so beautiful and so pretty that Ares, Hermes, Hades and Hephaestus wanted to marry. Demeter said “No!”. Persephone was the daughter of Demeter and Zeus. Zeus was the most powerful god and Demeter was the goddess of agriculture. One time, Hades asked Zeus if he could marry Persephone. The answer was yes, but Demeter denied it. Then Hades decided to kidnap her! When Persephone was picking flowers with some nymphs, suddenly there was a crack! And a crash! And Hades burst out of the ground! Then he grabbed her and took her to the Underworld. Demeter was furious and she turned the nymphs into a griffin and a mermaid. She searched and searched for her daughter but she could not find her. She became so sad that no plants grew. The gods and goddesses got very hungry. They asked Hermes to rescue Persephone. He found her and told Hades to leave her alone. Hades said yes, but he first tricked Persephone into eating 6 pomegranate seeds. Then the punishment was she had to stay in the Underworld for one month for each seed she ate. Then she could stay with her mother for 6 months. So in Spring and Summer, Persephone is home and the trees blossom and sheep have lambs and ducks have ducklings. In Winter and Autumn Persephone is in the Underworld so bears hibernate and the trees lose their leaves.
