We are delighted to share that our former dental clinic space has been transformed into a dedicated low sensory learning environment for our tamariki.

This calm, flexible space has been carefully designed to support many of our neurodiverse learners, as well as other students who benefit from time in a quieter, thoughtfully controlled setting.

The refurbishment includes new blinds, soft lighting, refreshed wall coverings, and a heat pump to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere. We have also invested in specialist resources — including equipment to promote physical movement, fine-motor development, sensory regulation, and problem-solving. Everything in the room has been chosen with care, with student wellbeing and focused learning at the heart of every decision.

This new space provides tamariki with opportunities to regulate emotions, reset when environments feel overwhelming, and return to their learning feeling settled and ready to engage. It has been wonderful to see the space already being used daily and making a meaningful impact for our learners.

We are also grateful for the guidance and expertise of Chelsie Willis, who works alongside our learning assistant team every Friday. Her professional support has enriched our practice and helped us further develop our understanding of how to best meet the needs of neurodiverse students.

Although this space was not part of this year’s original budget, the Board recognised the increasing number of students who require specialised support and made a strategic decision to invest in this purpose-built environment. We are proud to offer a space that reflects our commitment to inclusion, manaakitanga, and supporting every learner to thrive.
