Year 3 Trips to Huia Beach and Lower Dam

Victoria McDowall —

Rooms 7, 8, 9 and 10 had two fantastic trips last week.

Last week the Year 3 syndicate completed their Inquiry learning about being Water Kaitiaki by visiting Huia Beach and Lower Dam. The children were able to consolidate their understanding of the water cycle, water conservation, as well as how water is stored and treated.

We were very lucky with the weather on both days and Rooms 8 and 10 had the unexpected bonus of seeing the Power Rangers TV show being filmed! Thank you to all of the wonderful whānau that helped out on the trips, as well as the teachers and children who made the trips so enjoyable. Here are a few highlights from the children:

The spillway can be dangerous so you have to be careful when you’re looking into it. When the water in the dam is too high it goes down into the spillway and ends up in the stream. When the saltwater and the freshwater meet it is called brackish water and that is also called an estuary. - William, Room 7

I liked getting exercise when we walked up the big hill to the dam. It was a nice, sunny day - Ioana, Room 8

I enjoyed looking through the little hole to see down into the spillway. It was bit scary! I learnt that the lower dam has more water than the upper dam. - Zara, Room 9

It was really awesome and fun! I liked seeing the lambs. I counted four. I liked seeing the Power Rangers too. We saw the blue one and the red one - Mika, Room 10
