Citizen Scientists

Miro and Shakirah - R20 —

Room 20 visited Titirangi beach today to carry out a survey to see how much rubbish was on the beach.

We worked with Shelly from Sustainable Coastlines and she helped us to follow a scientific procedure.

We had to measure an 18m by 100m rectangle shape on the beach. We then formed a line and carefully raked the sand and sea lettuce to see if there was any human made rubbish. When we found rubbish we put it into sacks and brought it back to school to classify and sort it.

We observed that there was less rubbish on the beach than we thought. Probably the most common bit of rubbish we found was landfill. There wasn't a lot of plastic.

As citizen scientists we can go back next year and carry out another survey and compare our results.
