Online learning - welcome to our world!

Rachel Whalley - August 20, 2021

We are looking for the silver lining in these challenging Covid times. For us at the VLN Primary we feel proud to support our schools and learners in staying connected and learning from home. Here is how the first few days of lockdown went for our learners.

Across our primary and secondary VLNC schools on 18th August, the first day of lockdown, we had:

  • 138 zoom sessions (classes) running,
  • 240 hours of learning
  • & 458 learning together.

These were our regular timetabled online classes running as they do every week, in addition to extra sessions eteachers provided for their own school's learners.

Feedback from our VLN Primary eteachers is that attendance has been very good, between 60% to 80% across classes with full attendance in many classes. We have a Zoom room helpdesk open throughout school hours. Although last week it was hardly needed as students are able to get themselves to class. We keep it open anyway as a drop in point and extra layer of support for our learners and whānau. It's great to connect with so many parents and whānau and to have supporting teachers join with their learners in our classes.

Our learners are very engaged in their independent learning (Google classroom and Seesaw activities):

"Mōrena team are you finding like me that the independent work is flowing in big time? Many of my budding songwriters are feeling inspired - we even have a full ‘Covid-19 sucks’ song that has emerged this morning from one of our songwriters. Hope the day keeps being filled with lovely surprises!" eteacher

The Digital Divide continues to be a real concern particularly for our rural and remote learners where internet connectivity, either lack of, quality or affordability are a barrier. There are a number of students who we won't see again until they are back at school. We know that learning happens everywhere, all the time and being online is a small part of the bigger learning picture for our ākonga. We look forward to seeing all our learners again when lockdown is over
