Languages
Check out Oakura School's (Mandarin with eTeacher Lisa Wang) role play of eating out at a Chinese restaurant.
French students (with eTeacher Gayleen Mackereth) designed a house interior with their newly acquired vocabulary, and tried cooking a French inspired recipe (all in French!)
A group of VLN Primary te reo Māori students from across our classes came together to lead Te Wiki o te Reo Māori to over 1600 other students from around Aotearoa!
Digital technology
The three students from Banks Ave School worked collaboratively on their 'Unofficial Minecraft' site in web design (with eTeacher Jen Hammonds)
Students in Digital Tech (with eTeacher Jen Hammonds) designed a theme for a Scratch game and then used feedback from their peers to improve. Check out Spaceman Pong by Sam at Ohura School, Outerspace Pong by Freddie at Ladbrooks, and Catch the Pizza Sauce by Jed at Tairua.
Digital Technologies Extension (with eTeacher Lucie Lindsay) took it a step further and designed and coded projects with a range of languages. Asha from Te Puru focused on a project for learning your pepeha. Check out the mahi from these ākonga here with our Digital Tech awards, and here from Halfmoon Bay Digital Technologies Extension!
Creative arts
In Song Writing (with eTeacher Jan Bolton) Charlotte from Makuri School wrote, sung and created the beats for a catchy ditty about being in quarantine.
Students in Design Intro (with eTeacher Jen Hammonds) worked through an authentic process to create logos for imagined companies (or mum's company in the case of Summer!).
India from Geraldine High School wrote a Pablo Neruda inspired poetry in Creative Writing (with eTeacher Alana March)...
If I were to write an ode
It would be
To writing
It creates,
It destroys,
It calms,
It makes a world
Full
Of beauty
Zara from Te Puru School wrote an ode extolling the virtues of being a VLN learner
Mentoring
Students in our mentoring programme (with eTeachers Alia Malik and Jen Hammonds) presented their project progress on Zoom at the end of the year. Check out Sophia's narrative project based on Lyre the dragon who can't grow up, with a Q&A from the audience at the end.
These are just a few snapshots from student mahi through out the year. Despite the circumstances it's been a great few semesters of learning and we're looking forward to what 2022 brings!
