From exploring to embedding
Jenni Hammonds - February 20, 2022
Jan Thompson, Leader of Learning at Banks Avenue School engaged with VLN Primary for the first time in 2021. The kura utilised online learning as a means of extension and enrichment for a number of their senior students who participated in Math Explorations, Web Design and Design.
Real life skills
Jen Hammonds, who taught both web design and design for VLNP promotes real life skills. Students consider their customer or audience, give and receive feedback, and make use of the tools and techniques of professionals.
"The process of designing - a web site, logo or product - is equally as important as the final outcome. Students learn to consider different perspectives, to justify design decisions, and appreciate the iterative nature of design" Jen Hammonds (eTeacher)
Student self-management
Banks Avenue School are waiting on their new school to be built, and having spaces for programmes such as VLNP has been an important element of the new design. In the meantime, however, they have made use of the space available. Students set up their devices in a space adjoining the main classroom. It's mostly quiet, and students are aware that they're being trusted to show self-management during Zoom and independent activities. Self-management often needs to be grown and supported by the school and the eTeacher, and as with all learning, it's an iterative process for everyone involving clear, constructive and collaborative communication.
Funding the programmes
The initial year of VLN Primary was funded by members of the school's parent community. Students and teachers fed into a report to the board of trustees, who recognised the value of such programmes and committed to making VLN Primary part of the school budget.
"This year we've gone 'let's look at it, let's experience it, let's learn from it'. And absolutely we have learnt from it. But next year we want to embed it. That's the next step for us." Jan Thompson, Leader of Learning, Banks Avenue School
