Are you ready to journey through outer space? Join our group of keen young astronomers to make sense of the wonders in the night sky.

Glowing auroras, shooting stars, spiralling galaxies, rocket launches, or a lunar or solar eclipse - these incredible phenomena occur regularly around the world, and some can even be seen from your backyard!

In astronomy you'll investigate the dizzyingly large players that make up our cosmic neighbourhood and discover just how far apart these sparkling celestial bodies really are!

We’ll take a closer look at the special relationships between Earth, the Moon, and the Sun, and how they all work together in the vast universe yet affect life here on Earth. You'll also gain an understanding around how the distant stars of Matariki and Pūanga act as a celestial calendar here in Aotearoa.

Use your own observations of the night sky, discussions, book and internet research, to answer your own curly space questions.

  • Who is Orion, and why is his belt to famous?

  • Plasma - is it our blood or the centre of our universe?

  • What does an interstellar crash have to do with the moon?

The classes promote curiosity and inquiry, and students are encouraged to be self-directed and collaborative in their learning.

This course will introduce these components of the Planet Earth and Beyond strand of the Science Curriculum: 

  • Investigate the components of the solar system, (developing an appreciation of the distances between them)

  • Investigate and understand relationships between Earth, Moon, Sun, solar system, and other systems in the universe;

  • Understand that the relationship between the Earth, the Moon, and the Sun causes regular effects on Earth.

Students will develop their conceptual knowledge about the nature of science and how science knowledge has changed over time. They will share their knowledge and ideas through discussion, activities and independent inquiry.

The classes promote curiosity and inquiry, and students are encouraged to be self-directed and collaborative in their learning.
