Maths Problem Solving

Helen Goldsworthy —

Is problem solving your thing? Challenge your brain and share your skills.

Improve your maths skills through learning techniques to solve word problems that require comprehension skills and several steps to be worked out to get an answer.

Students learn strategies to solve number and algebra problems expressed in words by using multiplicative strategies and/or finding fractions, decimals, or percentages of amounts expressed as whole numbers, simple fractions, and decimals.

Students must be working at or above late Phase 3 NZC.

Students learn to:

  • Identify the key information in the question.

  • Know what the question is actually asking

  • Use efficient strategies to work the question out.

'Te Rerenga School has been enrolling students in the maths extension classes of Kōtui Ako VLN (Primary) for the past few years. We see this as a further way of extending our able students, separate to what we cater for in their classrooms.  They love the mathematical challenges being introduced in the classes and it has impacted positively on their overall learning and attainment in mathematics.'
