Welcome back to Aotearoa Dr Michael Barbour

Rachel Whalley —

It was a pleasure to host Michael on the first step of his study tour. We discussed our vision for virtual and distance learning in a future schooling system.

The study is a follow-up on a 2011 study which we also contributed to. The goal for the new study is to describe a future educational ecosystem that could leverage advantages of virtual and distance learning in all corners of the schooling sector.  The specific research questions are:

  1. What vision do those involved in virtual and distance learning in the New Zealand schools sector have for the future?
  2. What are the steps needed to achieve that vision?
  3. What are the possible impediments to that vision?

Kōtui Ako VLN has operated for nearly 30 years in a policy and resourcing vacuum. Michael's work will be important to inform the sector and advocate for sustainable support for online learning opportunities.

For those who are interested in the body or research on virtual and distance learning, Kōtuitui NEX has compiled this resource.

We wish Michael well on his trip around the motu over the month ahead as he meets with a wide range of people in the education sector and look forward to reading his research.
