Equitable access to learning

Rachel Whalley —

Equity and access to learning are one of the key principles of the VLN Primary initiative, so it is concerning to hear that for many schools funding is an issue.

It is concerning to hear that there are many schools who would like to enrol or extend their current enrolments with the VLN Primary online classes but are limited by funding constraints.

Equity and access to learning is an important principle of the VLN Primary initiative and we believe that systems level change is needed to ensure resourcing is allocated in ways that make learning more accessible to our students where ever they are, and this might include online learning. It is not just as simple as saying, "Schools get funded to deliver the curriculum". There is more that needs to change to enable flexible, accessible and equitable provision of learning and the VLN Primary continue to advocate for our learners in this respect.

We encourage you to talk to your local MPs or write to the Minister of Education or his Associate Ministers. Invite them to your schools to see how your children are accessing the curriculum through learning online.

Our participation fees are zero revenue, meaning they go only towards paying for teaching costs. In our 'Kete Economy' all funds from schools are put into the kete and from this we are able to contract our teachers and make them available across all our schools. For this reason we are unable to reduce our fees.

For schools who need assistance with fees we recommend you make application for Community Funds - here is our Funding Document with links to funders that might be helpful.

(Note: that as the VLN Primary is a MoE supported public education initiative it is inadvisable for schools to be asking parents to pay for participation fees.)
