Strategic Review - Community Consultation

Rachel Whalley —

The VLN Primary Governance team are seeking to consult with our community on our 2018-2020 Charter & Strategic Plan. All views are invited, from schools, whānau, & the wider community.

Here is the link to our Strategic Review document

Compared to our previous Charter, this version has a vision statement that focuses on learners instead of schools. Learners/ ākonga are our children, our teachers, our parents, whānau & community.

Many of the previous goals have been met and no longer appear in this charter, for example ensuring children have access to email, devices and online tools. We now consider this to be a pre-requisite for participation and not a goal in itself.

We have maintained many of our key goals, particularly those around meeting the needs of our learners and supporting student led opportunities. We believe we can do more for our students and articulated that in our vision statement "Connected Passionate Purposeful Learners".

We have more specific goals around improving teaching and learning through PLD, building our learning community and developing systems and structures that support this. This would value and recognise the importance of quality teachers to the online learners and an ongoing need for targeted and timely professional learning & support.

We have created a separate goal to recognise Te Tiriti o Waitangi, that focuses on the needs of Māori learners, this had previously been part of our wider cultural goals. This recognises the importance of empowering our Māori learners and valuing our bi-cultural heritage.

We are in a period of educational change akin to the changes experienced with the advent of Tomorrows School. It is a system change that we intend to see as an opportunity rather than a threat to the work of the VLN Primary School. This charter has reference to our schools community as a Community of Online Learning. We would also like to seek your opinion on the changes to legislation allowing Communities of Online Learning (or CoOLs). What do you think of this change to the legislation, and what do you see the role of the VLN Primary as a potential CoOL?
