More Language Classes

We offer the following language and culture classes, aligned to NZC: Afrikaans, French, German, and Spanish.

Afrikaans

This class is taught by Mevrou Annatjie Fourie, Principal of Ohura Valley Primary School as her contribution to the VLN Primary School. Not only does this provide our students with new learning opportunities but enables Annatjie to teach in an area she is passionate about.

Classes are aimed at the beginning language learner and can be tailored to suit the varying needs of the children. As well as language learning support for South African National (SANs) children in NZ, this class is suitable for NZ students with an interest in Afrikaans and want to be able to speak with their friends and neighbours.

Afrikaans Programme Overview

French

The lessons are based on the NZ Curriculum for French.  The students will gradually build up a rich repertoire of French words and sentences they can use for meaningful communication.

During the online course there will be a strong focus on learning useful French sentences such as ‘Aidez-moi, s’il vous plaît’ (help me, please). The students will be encouraged to actively use these ‘formulaic expressions’ for their communication in- and outside the classroom. The majority of the instructions will be given in French with the aid of sign language and/or drawings.

Spanish

Students will experience the Spanish language and culture through a variety of tasks, activities, games, arts & crafts, videos, songs. This all happens online, how amazing is that!

The lessons are based on the NZ Curriculum for Spanish. The students will gradually build up a rich repertoire of Spanish words and sentences they can use for meaningful communication.

Arts & crafts will be involved as well. The students will meet inspiring Spanish artists and will get the chance to be creative themselves.

German

Stephanie immigrated to New Zealand in 1998 and has been teaching German in a small Taranaki country school as well as online through the VLN Primary. She is passionate about languages and raises her children bilingually.

Languages open doors to learn about others and their culture, they can help create friendships and opportunities as well as understanding…
