Inspiring student led projects!

The mentoring programme brought together tauira wanting to take their VLN learning further by tying their strengths and interests into a purposeful project.

The first challenge for students was to choose a project, one that tied all three spheres together - interests, purpose and resources. They discussed possible ideas with coordinator, Jen Hammonds, alongside their VLN Primary eTeacher and as a collective they evolved a range of creative, inspiring and practical projects!

On the practical side of things students learnt specific skills around digital communication - including sharing and commenting on Google Docs, and composing an email to set up a Zoom for support. A shared GDoc was set up for students to outline major steps, and a space provided to break down those major steps into a Done, Doing, and To Do list.

As they worked through the stages of their project they kept track of their progress on a set of GSlides and saved relevant files and videos in their Google Drive.

These slides made up the basis of their presentation at the end of the programme. The focus lay on the process rather than the end product. Students were asked to outline the purpose of their project, the major steps they had taken including challenges (and how they overcame these or what they would do differently), and the possibilities - what remained on their list, and how could the project be taken further if they desired.

Mentoring brought together a group of supported, dedicated and creative students. They presented their projects live or using Flipgrid in the second to last week giving time for everyone to listen and jot down questions. Our final session was a chance to answer these in person and celebrate their achievements.
