PLD round-up: Managing Assessment in An AI World

Katherine Stewart —

This month we held a PLD session on how to work alongside AI when assessing ākonga work. eTeacher collaboration in these workshops generated strategies to minimise the impact of compromised authenticity.

There is an added challenge when assessing authentic mahi across our secondary ākonga.

While guidelines through NZQA and the Ministry of Education both state that generative AI such as ChatGPT can be used for research or information gathering purposes, discernment by both ākonga and kaiako should be used in how that information is used within assessment itself.

This gives teachers the opportunity to work with ākonga on prompts, selecting information, and citing ChatGPT as they would any other source, in their references.

On the other hand, we are aware of continuing to be realistic about working with rangitahi who are time-poor and sometimes under multiple academic deadlines.

In these sessions there was discussion around how eTeachers were able to deploy specific steps for students to follow to minimise the risk of misuse of AI in their assessment work.

Students should be able to:

1. Know what Chat GPT does, or can do, and how to cite it as a reference tool

2. Understand that Chat GPT can get it wrong. This is called a hallucination, where the AI invents information that is false, or can include references that don't exist in real research or literature

3. Know that when they learn online, regular submission of authentic work for formative assessment is key to gaining competency in submitting final work. This is where the kaiako learns the tone and style of the students work overall

4. Understand the concept of whanaungatanga, where teachers and students build a collaborative relationship in the face of challenging advances in an AI world.

As AI in assessment, in particular, is one of the many challenges faced by the education sector, Nex Kōtuitui PLD focus for an upcoming session could be on an aspect of AI, specific to eTeaching, where we build on what has been covered in previous PLD sessions.
