Home Learning

LBS —

You can help your child with learning by encouraging them to be enthusiastic, interested, and independent. It's never too early to begin to learn about being responsible. Every child has strengths and needs and they all learn at a different rate, so encourage your child's effort and try not to compare to others. Provide positive experiences and discussions.

Parents’ beliefs and expectations about homework differ considerably. After school time should be a balance between play, socialising, family time, hobbies and interests, sport, and a small amount of school work to grow well-rounded children. Homework should not be a stressful time. Projects and alternative homework will be provided from time to time, such as speeches, STEAM, and inquiry research.

Children's University also offers additional opportunities for extension in multiple curriculum areas.

Your child's teachers will let you know about the homework expectations at the beginning of the year.  This is generally spelling, reading, and basic facts. If you are looking to support learning at home, we suggest you use websites such as Studyladder.

Reading:

We encourage all children to read at home for enjoyment; we recommend 10-20 minutes a day.  You can support reading by:

- reading to and with your child

- helping your child when they need it - explore words they might not understand, relate them to real-world situations

- making reading an expectation

- making reading enjoyable, show your child that you read, talk about books and go to the library together

Visit the library or use Libby, Epic, or Borrowbox

Spelling:

The spelling words that your child brings home will relate to what they have been learning in class.  If you wish to extend your child in this area, they could put them into sentences, or create their own dictionary.

Mathematics:

Having secure knowledge of basic facts helps to free brain space for more complex problems.  Working through our basic facts brick system will help with this.  Also playing card and strategy games, number games in the car, and online will help.
