What is 'pricking out'?
Pricking out is an essential part of propagating plants sown in seed trays. Once seedlings have germinated, they need space to establish a strong root system. They are removed the from original seed tray and put into larger pots so they have room to grow.
Back in February, seeds were collected from around the school, including our precious kowhai tree, plus eco-sourced harakeke and cabbage tree, and planted in the shade house.
This mahi enables our tamariki to learn about the two step process of growing seeds and propagating; additionally create a supply of trees that can then be planted by us, sold or given away to other schools. We are grateful to have a shade house at school supplied by Enviro Schools and we make use of learning about how to grow, monitor, and care for native plants.
Next year, we have plans to soil and growth trials plus more seed collecting and planting.
