Planting seeds

Ali Duncan —

After harvesting eco-sourced seeds at Stackwoods Bend, they were soaked or nipped and planted out in seedling trays.  The seedlings will sit in the shade-house germinating and when they get to about 3 cm tall we will 'prick out'.

Pricking out is planting each small seedling into its own pot.  They will sit for a few years then we'll plant at Stackwoods or donate them.

The children did a great job preparing kowhai seeds today.  In nature, the seed goes through a bird before germinating. So in order to get the seed to be able to break through the crisp husk, it needs to be nipped first.  The other seeds were soaked in water first before being planted.

We look forward to seeing them grow over the next few years.
