Health and Safety

LBS —

Health and safety compliance - the school has a full set of health and safety policies and procedures and maintains a health and safety register. A board representative regularly reviews the school grounds and equipment to ensure our children, staff, and whanau are safe.

Medical - parents of new students complete a medical information form and need to let the school know if this changes. If you need the school to hold and give your child medicine, please complete a medication administration consent form authorising medication, dose, and conditions for administration.

Accidents - if your child is unwell and not able to stay at school, the school will contact you to pick your child up. If your child is involved in a more serious incident or a head injury and the school can’t contact you, the school will take the necessary steps to protect the child’s health.

Illness - you must inform the school if your child has an infectious disease. We notify parents of required absences from school in terms of health regulations. The Ministry of Health rule is sick children  need to stay away for at least 48 hours after the last symptoms of diarrhoea and/or vomiting. This is a minimum time period.  Please keep your child at home if they are lethargic or unwell.

Dental – Mobile dental nurses visit the school to do regular dental checks. We will let you know when the van is coming to school. You can opt-out of this service if you prefer private dental care. Please contact the Lincoln Dental Clinic on 0800 846 983 if your child requires urgent dental services.

Sunsmart - as a Sunsmart accredited school, we promote sun-smart behaviour. All children wear a wide-brimmed uniform hat outside in Terms one and four. Children must wear a rash top in the pool. The school provides sunblock - please talk to your child’s teacher if you want to provide your own sunblock.

Vision and hearing testing - if your child missed the vision and hearing testing at four years old this will be done by a qualified CDHB vision and hearing technician in your child’s first year of school. A vision test is done at school for year seven children.

Immunisation – the Ministry of Health requires schools to record whether new starters are partially, fully, or not immunised. We support the CDHB’s recommendations on immunisation programmes by providing information to parents and providing private space for on-site immunisations.

Public health nurse - CDHB public health nurses visit school, give advice, work with families, provide support, advocacy, and links to other services, plus liaise with doctors, specialists, and other health providers. Please contact the CDHB on 325 6218 if you have any health concerns for your child.

Road safety - the Kea Crossing isn’t a controlled crossing, so cars don’t have to stop for pedestrians when road patrol isn’t on. KLC children and parents do road patrol before and after school. The local community constable provides regular road patrol training. Please drive to the conditions, cross on the crossing, and don’t do u-turns in the school zone. Parents providing transport on school trips need to read and comply with the Child Motor Vehicle Passenger Restraint policy.

Bike safety - children are welcome to ride and bring scooters and bikes to school. Children biking to school must wear hi-vis vests and walk bikes in the school zone. Children must wear a helmet and ride bikes and scooters in designated areas only in the school grounds and walk in all other areas.

Emergencies - we are prepared to deal with emergencies at school. If we need to close the school, we will notify you via app alert, e-mail or text, depending on the coverage available. Staff will remain on site until all children are picked up if there is an emergency.

Animals - we love animals and have chickens, fish, and axolotls, as well as a popular pet day and canine educators. Please keep dogs on a leash on school grounds and controlled by an adult. If you tie them up outside school, please tie them to the fence by the carpark and not at the school gates as this is a busy spot.
