Poem for a birthday

annual anniversary - another year is marked

and I ask God who knows

           who sees

           who searches

                      what is in my heart

                                  will you tell me how I’m doing?

is this heart wiser

            stronger

            kinder

            fuller

                     of your love

                                 your grace

                                 your compassion?

if it is hardened

          tired

          shuttered

                     will you soften any hard edges

                               refresh the weary woundedness

                               let in your light to all the corners?

then all who know me can see you

           the God who sees

                       who knows

                       who loves abundantly

                                 in the joy

                                            the peace

                                            the love

                                                     that radiates from my heart because of your                                                                          work
