This week is Te Wiki o te Reo Maaori - 14th-20th Mahuru
(Mahuru is fourth lunar month of the Maaori year - approximately equivalent to September. It is the name of the star Alphard, whose reappearance in the night sky heralds the start of this month).
This week is Te Wiki o te Reo Maaori. Every day at Leamington School we strive to use te reo Maaori in our interactions with children whenever we can. This ranges from our COG's and Virtues, to the way we start and finish our day, use greetings, instructions, praise, and naming items around the class etc.
This term we are also learning about the qualities of native New Zealand animals to make kaitiaki (guardians) of our COG's and Virtues.
We are proud to be a school that is doing what we can to be part of the revitalisation of te reo Maaori. Language, culture and identity cannot be separated. We are proud to celebrate and value the culture of every child, and proud to share in teaching children about the taonga of te reo Maaori.
