Ryleigh was a quick learner with the tools. He was patient and skilled at putting together his bug hotel even when Mrs. Huxtable couldn't figure it out!

Bug Hotels, Bird Houses and Birdfeeders

Nicole Huxtable —

Mike helped the class with our technology curriculum by leading us through a woodwork project.

Tūī were very grateful and lucky to have Mike, aka Mr Cavanagh Senior, to lead us through an awesome woodwork project a few weeks ago.

Mike led us through a 2 day design and build process. The students could choose between building a bird house, bird feeder or a bug hotel. The students learnt so much; drawing to scale, creating a cutting list, perspective drawings and convert units- all before making any cuts!

The students built a cutting board that they used to cut and build their project which was good practice with the tools and equipment.

Mike used the table and drop saws but the students used all the other tools: drills, impact drivers, hand saws, squares, jigsaws. I was very proud of the students. They did so well with learning new skills, following Mike's instructions, being safe and sharing and helping each other. We only had 1 very minor injury- a burn from a drill. I would say that is a success!

A massive thank you to Mike. He brought tools and sourced and brought all the timber to school.

Thank you also to those that lent us tools. We could not have done it with out you.

Ngā mihi,

Nicole Huxtable
