Netsafety Week in Tūī

Nicole Huxtable —

Paula Wistrand from Netsafe Helping Tūī During Netsafety Week.

Paula came and gave a wonderful lesson to Tūī around staying safe online today. Paula is a trained primary school teacher, has worked for the NZ Police and the Ministry of Education.

Paula shared with us what our rights and responsibilities of being online are. Paula was positive and encouraged us that there is awesome things about being online but made it clear that the Harmful Digital Communications Act is there with consequences if we breech the Act.

Many students were brave and honest in sharing that they had done some things that have breached the Act. Paula left us with the knowledge of what is not okay and what to do if we get into trouble or become a victim of digital harm; talk to an adult and call Netsafe 7days, 8am-8pm. Forwarding on a photo you have received, encouraging others to post harmful things, being offensive or mean online are all breaches of the Act.

Tūī will continue to talking about staying safe and doing the right things online.

Thanks to Paula for giving her time, knowledge and resources to us.

Ngā Mihi,
