2018 Achievement

Nick Gunn —

The following is an update around one of our achievement targets throughout 2018 focusing on improving outcomes for learners with a history of underachieving in reading and writing.

In 2017 we identified a group of learners who were underachieving in literacy. This cohort became the focus of the achievement target below:

Target 1:

To accelerate the literacy (reading and writing) progress of the 25 learners in Year 3 -7 who were underachieving in 2017 by at least one year of progress.

A range of interventions were put into place and these learners were closely monitored throughout the year which helped inform our teaching practices.

Image One below shows the outcomes for this group of learners in writing which can be summarised here:

  • Of the 26 learners who had a history of underachievement:

    • 3 (11.5%) made two year of progress.

    • 13 (50%) made one year of progress.

    • 6 (23%) made less than one year of progress.

    • No data was available for 4 learners.

Image Two below shows the outcomes for this group of learners in reading which can be summarised here:

  • Of the 19 learners who had a history of underachievement:

    • 2 (11%) made more than two year of progress.

    • 6 (32%) made two year of progress.

    • 7 (37%) made one year of progress.

    • 3 (16%) made less than one year of progress.

    • No data was available for 1 learner.

The following next steps were identified and many are already in place:

  • Share data with teaching teams identifying the learners who did not make one year of progress.

  • Identify interventions already in place (RTLB, Learning Assistant, Individual programmes etc).

  • Identify new or additional interventions (for example we are liaising with RTLB around implementing some new programmes to support literacy development).

  • Tracking and monitoring of learners who did achieve 1-2 years progress to ensure this is sustained.

  • Introducing new approaches to support the development of writing for all learners including those who have a history of underachievement.

  • Some of these learners have ‘whole child’ needs, these are being addressed through Brain Gems, Mana Ake referrals/support etc.

In the next eNews we will update you on this year's targets and the planned actions to support them.
