Remembering Jane Heyes and Norma Swain

Helen Robertson —

Our school has a beautiful new space for reflection, a memorial bench dedicated to two incredible women, Jane Heyes and Norma Swain.

The bench is nestled under the branches of our special oak tree, a silent witness to generations of students and a significant part of our school's history here in Levin.

Jane Heyes was our much-loved Reading Recovery teacher. With her gentle wairua and endless patience, she helped countless tamariki unlock the magic of reading. She didn't just teach words; she opened up a world of stories and possibilities for children who needed it most.

Norma Swain was a special and involved nana to our entire School Whānau. Norma had her own special way of showing aroha. She'd bake her famous shortbread, hand out boiled eggs and marshmallows to hungry kids, and share her joy by teaching groups how to play the timbrells. Her manaakitanga and warm spirit made her a constant and cherished presence in our kura.

This memorial bench under our historic oak is a perfect tribute to Jane and Norma. It's a place where we can sit and remember their kindness, their dedication, and the countless ways they enriched our lives. It’s a quiet spot to reflect on the deep roots they put down in our School community and the enduring legacy they have left behind.
