Canterbury Secondary Schools' Swimming Championships - Wednesday 31st March at Jellie Park

Karen Wareham —

This year we had a team of 13 swimmers entered across Junior and Senior age groups.

Caitlin Finnie, Tamsyn Knowles, Rory Gordon, Charlie Overend, Remy McConachy, Lachlan Mackle, Ross Hess, Harrison James, Bryn Drummond, Hugo Wrathall, Jackson Hickling, Max Wright and Lilli Cheeseman.

We left Lincoln at an early 7.30am to get to Jellie Park and find out we were not allowed in until 8.30am, the place was busy with an aquarobics class!

Warm up was quick and then junior racing started at 9am. All swam well, highlights being Harrison James 2nd in 12-13YO boys 50 m backstroke and Rory Gordon gaining a new personal best time for her 100 m freestyle finishing 3rd in 14YO girls event.

Then we had the open competition where we were able to get a couple of relay teams in as age doesn’t matter. All swimmers had some fun swimming as a team. Bryn Drummond was 2nd in the open 200 m freestyle and Hugo Wrathall was 2nd in open 100 m butterfly. Our four girls in attendance, three juniors Tamsyn, Caitlin and Rory with Lilli, who has not trained for a while, were stoked to not finish last in the open girls freestyle relay!

After a short break, the senior racing started. This was exciting with Hugo Wrathall breaking the CSS record for 15YO boys 100 m Freestyle in a new time of 53.27 seconds, Lilli Cheeseman was 4th in 15YO girls 50 m backstroke, Bryn Drummond was 2nd in 15YO boys 50 m butterfly and then to finish the day off, our 15YO boys freestyle relay team of Bryn Drummond, Jackson Hickling, Max Wright and Hugo Wrathall finished 3rd in a respectable time of 1.53.27.

The team were a wonderful group of students to have at the pool for the day with many swimming personal best times.

Max and Rory have been doing well in their Open water endeavours and Hugo, Harrison and Bryn are off to National Age Group Championships during the first week of the upcoming school holidays. Swim fast boys!

Our next school event is South Island Secondary School Championships 19th – 20th June in Timaru. We have a team heading down which will be lots of fun and we hope will bring some great results.
