LU Netball Races into Round 2

Graeme Campbell —

Our netball sides have commenced their new round robin and will be looking to set high targets as they move into the championship rounds.

The Premier A team finished the Challenge round sitting in third behind Kereru A and Technical A having won 3 out of their five matches. Last week saw the commencement of the Competition round with Lincoln taking on St Nicholas A. The side were able to hold the lead for all four quarters to eventually come away with a convincing victory 63-51.

Last night's match at the Bishopdale YMCA couldn't have started better for the side when they played against Kereru A. The team looked sharp with their passing and movement through the court and the accuracy of the shooters was second to none. They were able to go into the first quarter with a handy 19-9 lead. However this was short lived with Kereru making changes on court and closing the gap at the half to 27-29. A 10 all third quarter had the side neck and neck until the final stanza when the opposition were able to pull away to an 8 point victory 46-54.

LU B Netball side also finished their first round in 3rd place with 3 wins and two losses to Kai Toa B and Belfast A. At the start of round 2 on Saturday they played the enthusiastic and skilful Rangi Ruru A side and narrowly went down 37-45 in an entertaining match. They will play Kia Toa B on Saturday on at 1:00pm on court 5.

The returning C side has continued to build on their team culture and camaraderie throughout the season but had a mixed start with only the two wins over St Nicholas C and Cashmere and a narrow bonus point loss to Hornby A to finish the opening round in fourth place. Saturday had the first match of the competition round and although starting well against Technical C they found themselves off the pace eventually going down 46-64. They will play Canterbury University B on Saturday at 2:30pm on court 5.

Having senior players assisting with coaching this year has helped the D to develop a good game plan to combat the opposition in their tough grade. They only managed to pick up a draw in the first round and at the start of round 2 they were narrowly beaten by 24-32 by Kia Toa E on Saturday. Each week they continue to improve their shooting and are becoming more competitive. This Saturday the side will play Christchurch Football Club C at 10:30am on court 3.

LU Netball's newly formed Social League that is played on Monday evenings is proving very popular with 8 teams entered. The competition is on hold over the examination period and university holidays but will be returning with anticipation in semester 2.

Once again a huge thank you to Online Design and Build for their continual support through their sponsorship in 2018.
