LU Rugby hosts six matches in their 2017 Club Day

Graeme Campbell —

On Saturday 29 April Lincoln University Rugby had all six teams playing on campus for round four of the Metro rugby competition.

With some disruptive starts to the season for many grades due to weather and university holidays if was great to finally have a full round of competition and even better having all teams at home.

The 1:00pm matches commenced with the Hawkins Premier Reserve (formerly Senior Div 2) Wethers taking on the best in the west, Burnside. Lincoln were able to exert strong phases of attack to run in 6 tries, 5 conversions to Burnside's 2 tries to take the match 40 - 10 and the third win from three.

The Lincoln University Premier Colts have had an impressive start to their campaign as three year defending champions with good wins over HSOB, a recent win over UC in trying conditions 40 - 0 and a disciplined display against Marist Albion to take the Club Day victory 45 - 14.

The newly formed LU Dags side plays in the Metro Colts Reserve grade with the LU Hunters and is entirely first year players. Having only played one match back at the beginning of April the team were a bit underdone in fitness and game sense when they played Ashley. Some good continuity occurred in patches throughout the match but it wasn't enough to get up eventually going down 8 - 24.  Our LU Hunters took on last years Colts Reserve Champions, CBHS 2nd XV, and in a tough and physical display they were able to gain superiority in most aspects of play to convincingly win 42 - 0. They are now top of the table after their hard fought 20 - 5 win over UC on Wednesday evening.

Lincoln Women's Rugby started the season with a 1 point victory over Kaiapoi followed by a loss to HSOB and on the Saturday they had a great win over the Sydenham sisters 35 - 19. This week they will take on BDI at the military camp on Saturday.

In the final match of the day the Lincoln University Div 1 RAMS played the uncompromising Linwood Bulls who took full advantage of the match. Going into the break LU had a good lead 17 - 6 but they were unable to stop the Linwood lads picking up a head of steam immediately after the break. Linwood continued to dominate the Lincoln side and went on to score three converted tries to Lincoln's one coming away with a good victory 34 - 24.

LU Rugby would like to thanks all their club sponsors especially Te Whariki Lincoln Sub-Division, TL Parker, Canterbury Teamwear, Pub Charity, Sportsmed, Motus, Insolvency Management, Powerade and Lincoln University as well as all the Alumni, Parents and supporters who came out to watch.
