Those were the days

Graeme Campbell —

Way back in 2010 LU Rugby went to OZ for a pre-season tour.

On the 16th of March 25 players and 7 management from LURFC Senior team travelled to Sydney to play the University of Wollongong RFC and Lindfield RFC. All were looking forward to some tough matches and some good weather.

A fine St Patrick’s Day greeted the team at the University of Wollongong however it was disappointing that they could not muster a strong front row. The team played well for the early season and dominated the Mallee Bulls. Tries to Jesse Bright (2), Jeremy Thomas, Luke Graham, Richard Mavor, Rowan Mckenzie and Jeff Wright, plus a try, conversion and penalty to Aaron Somerset and 3 conversions to Simon Calder took the final score out to 51 - 0.

The tour party then travelled back up the coast to Sydney CBD where, on the Friday night under lights, the team took on Linfield RFC. Again the combinations worked well and the game plan was adhered to resulting in another good victory 56 - 7. Tries were scored by Jack Turley, Tom Parsons, Luke Graham, Sean Walters, Shaun Hill, Tom Grogan (2) and Andrew Smith with a try, 4 conversions and a penalty to Aaron Somerset.

Manly Beach was the favourite spot for recovery on the Saturday although the shark warning proved to be interesting.

Many thanks to the players for conducting themselves admirably and who were great ambassadors for the club, university and country. The coaches, Mark Herbert and Allan Lindsay, manager Jane Edwards, trainer Richard Deuchrass, physio Rachel Landreth and our hydration research specialist Felila Ward, who all made the whole tour run so smoothly.
