Kimihia te Mātauranga Basketball Performs Well at South Island Tournament

Jesse Harding —

The team can hold heap up high after the successful tournament.

The Linwood College Senior A Basketball Team recently participated at the Secondary Schools South Island Basketball Tournament in Greymouth.

Firstly, we want to thank all those that supported the team to be able to go to this tournament. We could not have attended without the support of our teachers, whānau and community.

The Linwood College Senior A Basketball Team that participated in the tournament only had 4 seniors in the team. The other 6 boys were all juniors, showing the future of Linwood College Basketball is in good hands.

The team was placed in the 'group of death' with defending champions Hillmorton High School, the eventual 5th placed finishing Kavanagh College, and Rangiora New Life who placed 5th last year and qualified for Nationals.

After leading Hillmorton for the first half, Linwood College could not hang on and lost the game to Hillmorton. Later that evening, the team played Rangiora New Life. After a last-minute comeback win earlier in the season against Rangiora New Life, we knew this would be a close game. Linwood College eventually pulled away to take the win.

The next morning the team played a very strong Kavanagh College who were too good as we could just not close the gap after getting into a 10 point deficit early. This is a team we could have beat if we played to our potential.

Linwood College then went on to win all of their remaining games to finish 9th.

The team enjoyed a visit to the pools, Castle Hill, and helping with the cooking and team-building activities led to joy and laughter. The team had the time of their life.

Captain Jayden Bamford was the MVP of the team during the tournament, playing through a painful heel injury to lead the team. Josh Galang, Zarkeigh Tonihi and Jared Longos were the other stand-out players from the tournament.

Well done Linwood College Senior A Basketball. Enjoy the off-season!
