Government Offer to 1700 Schools: School Donations

Richard Edmundson —

A financial saving to whānau: LCŌ accepts government offer on donations.

Kia ora koutou.

This year's government budget included a new policy that provided decile 1-7 schools the option to receive $150 per student, per year, as long as they agree not to ask parents and caregivers for a school donation or for donations towards curriculum expenses. There is one exception: school camps and and curriculum related trips where students are expected to be away overnight.

Our Board has accepted this offer.  This was not a difficult decision to make as it would have been morally unthinkable not to, as evidenced by over a year ago LCŌ had already stopped requesting a general school donation.

What is curriculum-related is relatively complicated so the Ministry of Education has developed an information sheet for parents and whānau. In general, anything that is optional for students can still be charged for, eg the school ball. Please see the link below for further general explanation and specific examples.

What families/whānau need to know about school/kura donations and payments

Our Board is very pleased to be able to support our community in this way.
