Junior Option Choice for 2020

Dan Russell —

Over the next fortnight, Year 8 and 9 students will be choosing their options for 2020. Below is some useful information about what, and how, to choose.

Students will be working on our Career Central platform, to choose their options for 2020. There are some important considerations when choosing options, and having alignment between the student, their whānau, and the school, is a great place to start.

1. Students should choose a broad curriculum for years 9 and 10, that gives them experiences across a wide range of subjects. This is the 'try before you buy' approach that allows them to make more informed choices later on.

2. Students should choose options that they enjoy. This will mean they have greater motivation to succeed.

3. Students should choose options that they are good at. This will mean they will succeed at a high level.

4. Students should try options out to see what they involve, as often strengths and skills a student possesses, or has the potential for, only arise when they take part in new experiences.

5. Students should discuss the options available with family and start to think about their strengths and interests and what subjects might be best for them.

Family and whānau could discuss with their student about building their ability to make good, long term decisions.
