Changes to Education: Government Announcements

Richard Edmundson —

Reform of the Tomorrow’s Schools system.

On Tuesday 11 November the Education Minister, the Honorable Chris Hipkins, announced a reform of the Tomorrow’s Schools system. Iona Holstead, the Secretary of Education - i.e. the leader of the Ministry of Education - has stated that these "significant" reforms aim for:

  • "more frontline support closer to schools to give every child the best chance to succeed"
  • education as "a more networked and supported system to be more responsive to the needs of learners/ākonga and their whānau"

Iona Holstead further states that these changes will:

  • "require an ongoing investment of both time and resource. They will need to be managed in a coherent and connected way over the next 5-10 years."

The following link is an information sheet about these changes. Opening the link in a new window takes you to the Ministry of Education that has other information sheets.

The BOT will be discussing these changes at its meeting on Thursday 28 November and will report back to the community after that.
