After a long night of heavy rainfall and a weather forecast of thunder and more rain, we were blessed with a great day at Oreti Beach!
Following a busy and tiring day at Camp Columba, Room 4 and Room 5 were straight into another day of education outside of the classroom.
We started off at the Oreti Beach Surf Club where we learnt about IRB's, how to best help people in danger while at the beach, and covered the ABC's of First Aid and basic CPR methods. We learnt how to best use the rescue floatation device, and some interesting facts about the other types of boats and materials they use for surf lifesaving.
The rain stopped in time for us to head down to the beach for some fun relay games, where we had to use our knowledge of surf lifesaving, and our teamwork and problem solving skills, for success. We had a couple of other fun water introduction activities before we were finally allowed to get right into the water for a good splash around. It was cold, and there were some big waves, but we had a blast!
We headed back to the Surf Club to get changed into warm clothes, and relax while eating our lunch. Our day ended with a discussion about the top 10 things we need to remember for beach safety, and learning how to identify and stay safe in a rip. We worked in small groups to quickly create, and then perform, our newly learnt knowledge from the day - a great way to end a great day!
Massive thanks to all our parent helpers - we could not do the day without you. We are also very grateful to the three lovely lifeguards who travelled down from Dunedin to educate us all! Even the adults picked up a new fact or two!
Here's to great weather over the summer, and being able to safely enjoy the beach and other water areas!
