Netball
Logan Park netball is on the up. This year Danielle Frost stepped into oversee the coaching side of Netball. Danielle has played netball to a regional level so has an excellent understanding of the game. Each week, with the support of Caitlin Constable a university student volunteer, Danielle ran training for our top Netball teams.
The senior girls played well this season progressing to a more difficult grade. Our junior teams were coached by Logan Park Senior students - Laura Graham, Sophie Black, Maria Kohu Morris, Sofia Till, Isabel Townsley and Silva McDowell. Thanks so much girls for giving up your time. Also a big thank you to Olivia and Sophie Bradfield, Esther Tamati and Charlotte Murphy for coaching teams at Dunedin North Intermediate.
Over the winter months, 2019’s netball season saw a lot of challenges, successes and enjoyment for Logan Park’s Junior Gold team.
Highlights of this years season include activities such as the Otago Secondary Schools Netball Championship and the Co-Ed tournament, as well as our Saturday morning competition.
When our Saturday morning games started, the biggest learning curve for our team was creating a new dynamic. All of us had solid skill sets, but we then had to apply them to the new team. Thankfully for us, strong relations were built early on in the season, so we became able to shift focus to more complex setups and gameplay that paid off in the end. At the end of the season, after an intense final against Taieri, we were runners up in our division. At the OSS Netball Championship, we had a brilliant two days. Despite it being a long, tiring two days, as a team we pulled through, fighting our hardest every game. By the end of the tournament, we gained 3rd place after beating Bayfield in our final. Seeing as Logan Park hadn’t placed in this tournament for quite some time, it was a great achievement and we were all feeling pretty pleased with ourselves. The experience together as a team was exceedingly valuable.
Huge thank-you to our coaches, Laura and Sophie, who guided us through this season, showing us what it takes to be good players through hard work, commitment and being a good team player. Thank-you to Mrs Frost and Caitlin Constable for running practices and being a big contribution to our improvement and experience as the season progressed.
By the time this season had come to a close, we had all improved heaps and built a lovely team dynamic which we certainly hope to carry into 2020, both as the year nines moving into year tens, and the year tens moving into the senior school.
Otago Secondary School Netball Championships
Logan Park’s Junior Gold netball team came away with a third placing at the Otago Secondary School Netball Championships which were held at the Edgar Centre over a weekend in early June.
This result is a big accomplishment as Logan Park hasn’t placed at this tournament for some time.
The team has been playing together all season and the tournament represented a tipping point for the team. The weekend of intensive games provided great opportunities and the team really came together which was reflected in our great result. However, the team cannot take all the credit! We owe a BIG thank you to Mrs Frost, Sophie and Laura our dedicated coaching team and of course those who came along to cheer us on!!
